DAY # 1 - ARRIVALS - FARGO

Welcome to Legendary North Dakota! You will be met today at the Fargo, ND airport and transported to our hotel. Ourjourney begins at the Sons of Norway lodge – the largest in the world – for some authentic Norwegian fare and entertainment (yah, sure!). Overnight in Fargo. (D)

DAY # 2 - FARGO/MOOREHEAD

This morning we’ll visit the Hjemkomst Center, which houses the 76-foot, hand-built Viking ship, Hjemkomst. In 1982 Robert Asp sailed this very ship 6,000 miles to Norway, the land of his ancestors. Also at the center you’ll tour an exact replica of a Norwegian Stav Kirke. Next it is on to the Comstock House, an 1882 Victorian home with the original furnishings that was home to Moorhead pioneer Solomon G. Comstock, a state senator considered to be the founder of Moorhead State University. A city tour full of surprises includes the unique Bonanzaville! – fifteen acres of historic buildings, ranging from a sod house to a church, court house and country store, specialty museums house antique cars and other memorabilia. Overnight again in Fargo. (B)

DAY # 3 - FARGO TO BISMARCK

This morning we will travel to Jamestown, ND where we will visit the Frontier Village & National Buffalo Museum – “Home of the World’s Largest Buffalo Monument”, measuring 26’ tall, 46’ long and weighing an incredible 60 tons! See a buffalo hide teepee, a 10,000 year old bison skull, and learn how the bison helped shape the West. See a live buffalo herd with not one but three authenticated albino buffaloes. Stroll through Frontier Village along boardwalks and see a preserved bit of the Old West in this recreated and restored authentic pioneer town. View a jail, post office, barber shop, and the Louis L’Amour writers shack. Fort Abraham Lincoln was Lt. Col G.A. Custer’s last assignment before riding off into history. We’ll tour the rebuilt Custer House and learn what life was like at a remote frontier army post. Overnight: Bismarck. (B, D)

DAY # 4 - KNIFE RIVER INDIAN VILLAGES

This morning we’ll travel to the only park in the National Park System which is set aside to commemorate the Plains Indian: Knife River Indian Villages. The outstanding interpretive center and model earth lodge shed light on the people who continually inhabited this site for as long as 500-600 years ago to 1845.  As we travel westward, we’ll visit one of the newer interpretive centers along the Lewis & Clark Trail, the Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center, which tells the story of of the confluence of these two mighty rivers, as well as provides the same magnificent view that Lewis and Clark Expedition members enjoyed when they visited in 1805 and 1806.  Overnight tonight in Williston, ND. (B)

DAY # 5 - FORT UNION / MEDORA MUSICAL

Another eventful day begins with a tour of the beautifully restored Fort Union.  Established  by John Jacob Astor’s American Fur Company, Fort Union was the most important fur trading post on the Missouri River between 1822 and 1867.  Our next stop illustrates one man’s dream of a cattle ranching and shipping empire. Named for the Marquis de Mores’ wife, Medora, the town boomed and busted at the end of the century, but not before Teddy Roosevelt became a resident and formulated many of his conservation ideas and rugged personal qualities. We’ll visit the national park named for the “bully” president, tour his cabin home, take in a performance of the one-man show “Bully”, enjoy a unique pitchfork fondue and cap the day off with the much-acclaimed Medora Musical. Overnight in Medora. (B, D)

DAY # 6 - THEODORE ROOSEVELT NATIONAL PARK / FREE TIME IN MEDORA

We’ll spend the morning today exploring the national park named for the “bully” president and tour his cabin home. The afternoon is free to explore the tiny western town of Medora with its numerous shops and museums, including the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame. Other options include golfing, swimming or horseback riding. Tonight’s supper is an old-fashioned western cookout. Overnight again in Medora. (B,D)

DAY # 7 - FORT MANDAN / LEWIS & CLARK INTERPRETIVE CENTER / NORTH DAKOTA HERITAGE CENTER

Today we’ll return to Bismarck where we’ll visit the site where the Corps of Discovery wintered under the watchful eyes of the Mandans and Hidatsas. We’ll visit the Fort Mandan replica and the newly expanded Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center which features fascinating interactive displays featuring the Lewis & Clark Expedition in North Dakota.  This afternoon’s highlight will be a visit to the outstanding North Dakota Heritage Center.    We’ll cap off this wonderful day in Legendary North Dakota with a delightful dinner cruise on the Lewis & Clark Riverboat as the sun sets over the Missouri River. Overnight again in Bismarck. (B,D)

DAY # 8 - FAREWELL

Our exploration of North Dakota’s legends is nearly over. Today we’ll reflect on the influence of these legends had on America’s history as we return to Fargo for afternoon departures. Airport transfers included. (B)
